Country Mile DK - Soay/Shetland Farm Yarn
We are so proud to release our first farm yarn. Originally developed as a reward for our Crowdfunder, we are offering the remaining skeins for sale to the general public.
Made from a mix of our Soay sheep's fleeces and those from our neighbour's flock of Shetlands, this is a gorgeous heathered shade of greyish brown. Spun by Uist Mill in the Western Isle, we asked them to make us the softest yarn possible and what came back was even better than we had imagined.
About Soay Sheep:
Soay's are the UKs most primative breed of sheep. Never having been improved for meat or wool production, they remain small and wild with wool that doesn't need to be shorn. Every spring we "roo" our sheep and gather the fleeces completely by hand.
About Shetland Sheep:
For our Country Mile DK, our Soay wool has been blended with Shetland wool from Irene and Jim Riach's flock kept across the Lake of Menteith from the farm. Another Native Scottish breed, Shetlands are small sheep from the islands of the same name. They have beautiful soft wool, perfect for knitting and crocheting.
About Uist Wool:
Uist Wool is a small mill on the island of North Uist.
The original idea to build a new Mill in North Uist emerged from a collective will to find a fresh purpose for local fleece that would reconnect the community with their cultural heritage of wool-working.
We are so proud to produce a thoroughly Scottish wool in our Country Mile DK
